Castello di Rossino stands majestically on a promontory at the foothills of Mount Resegone, overlooking the picturesque village of Rossino, the town of Calolziocorte below, and the San Martino Valley, occupying a historically strategic position.
The Betrothed
Castello di Rossino overlooks “that branch of Lake Como which turns towards the south”, immortalised in Alessandro Manzoni’s most famous novel, The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi), which made this enchanting landscape renowned throughout the world. In his novel, Manzoni chose this very castle as the residence of the Unnamed, one of the story’s most iconic characters.
The Past
Dating back to the 13th century, this remarkable medieval complex was once one of the fortresses belonging to the powerful Benaglio family, the lords of the San Martino Valley.
Later acquired by the Rota family, the Castle became an important centre for trade among wool and silk merchants, while also playing a significant role in the collection of local taxes. Of its original six towers, five still survive today, one of which was transformed into a manor house during the 19th century.
The Present
Following a meticulous restoration aimed at preserving the charm and beauty of its ancient structures while making them fully accessible and functional, Castello di Rossino is now one of Lombardy’s oldest historic residences. Today, it offers an enchanting setting for weddings, corporate events and private celebrations, surrounded by the magical scenery of Lake Como and its unforgettable panoramic views.
Open all year round thanks to its particularly favourable climate and fully heated halls, Castello di Rossino also invites guests to enjoy its magnificent gardens from spring through autumn.
